“IBUKI-2 (GOSAT-2)” Equipped with Optical Units Marks 5 Years Since Operation Start / Receives Certificate of Appreciation from JAXA(JAPAN)

November 9, 2023

The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite-2 “IBUKI-2 (GOSAT-2)”, launched on October 29, 2018, celebrated its 5th anniversary  on October 29, 2023. To commemorate this milestone, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) held a ceremony on October 30 to present certificates of appreciation to the various manufacturers, universities, and other organizations that made significant contributions to the GOSAT-2 mission. Topcon also received a certificate of appreciation for the optical units used in the satellite.

“IBUKI-2 (GOSAT-2)” was launched as the successor to “IBUKI (GOSAT)”, the world’s first satellite dedicated to observing greenhouse gases. It aims to achieve the goals of 2015 Paris Agreement (limiting temperature rise to below 2°C and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions) by monitoring concentrations of greenhouse gases and particulate matter, such as PM2.5, on Earth.

Topcon delivered the optical units for the Cloud and Aerosol Imager-2 (CAI-2), contributing to the observation of clouds and aerosols to correct greenhouse gas concentration data, as well as estimating PM2.5 concentrations and black carbon levels.

During the ceremony, the JAXA First Space Technology Directorate awarded the certificates. Additionally, representatives from Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Space Engineering Development Co., Ltd. delivered speeches on behalf of the recipients, expressing gratitude to all those involved in the GOSAT-2 project.

“IBUKI-2” continues to operate with the main goal of observing greenhouse gases. Through “IBUKI-2,” Topcon will continue to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
