Collaboration with the Healthy Athletes® Program (HAP) to promote the health of athletes with intellectual disabilities (Japan)

May 30, 2024
In the ‘2022 Special Olympics Japan National Summer Games – Hiroshima,’ held in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, from November 4th to 6th, 2022, Topcon and Topcon Medical Japan collaborated as volunteers to support eye examinations for the Healthy Athletes® program. They promoted the health of athletes with intellectual disabilities by lending eye care products and diagnostic equipment.

“Special Olympics is an international sports event where athletes with intellectual disabilities participate. Like the Olympics and Paralympics, it is held every four years. The event held in Hiroshima in 2022 served as the selection process for the Japanese delegation for the World Games that was held in Germany in 2023.

The Healthy Athletes® program aims to promote health awareness, knowledge, and improve the quality of life for athletes with intellectual disabilities so they can perform to the best of their abilities in competitions. As part of this health promotion initiative, the program is conducted during Special Olympics events.

Among the six programs, Topcon sponsored the ‘Opening Eyes’ program, supporting eye examinations using the NW500 Non-Mydriatic Retinal Camera, the SL-D701 Slit Lamp, the KR-1 Kerato-Refractometer, and the CT-90A Tonometer. During the two-day event, 200 examinations were conducted.

The Topcon group continuously supports the initiatives that contribute to creating environments and cultural reforms where a diverse range of people can thrive.
