The Commendation for Science and Technology by Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2009

April 16, 2009

Two of our senior engineers have received a Commendation for Science and Technology in the Development Category, presented by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology, for their invention of optical distance measuring device with high resolution measuring device for time difference of continuous pulses. This prize is awarded to individuals who achieved remarkable results on the development and public understanding of the promotion of science and technology in Japan.

Accomplishment:
“Development of Optical Distance Measuring Devices with High Resolution Measuring Device for Time Difference of Continuous Pulses”

Awardees:
*Mr. Fumio Ohtomo (Director, Senior Managing Executive Officer)
*Mr. Masahiro Ohishi (Senior Manager of Corporate R&D Center, Imaging and Measuring Laboratory)

Details of Accomplishment:
This is the development of new high resolution measuring device which includes advantages of pulse method and phase difference method. The pulse method allows to measure long distance, while the phase difference method allows attaining high resolution. Combining both advantages into a new optical distance measuring device, the measurement range is greatly extended. Also, it is possible to obtain quantitative measurement data of damages incurred in dangerous areas where people cannot enter such as slopes areas of landsides caused by disasters, as well as to estimate cost and time periods need for restoration, by using this invention.

Award Ceremony:
Date: April 14, 2009
Venue: Toranomon Pastral
Awardees: Mr. Fumio Ohtomo, Mr. Masahiro Ohishi
